About
Minnesota State University, Mankato is a public university located in Mankato, Minnesota, and is one of the largest and oldest institutions within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Founded in 1868 as Mankato Normal School, the university originally focused on teacher training with an inaugural class of just 27 students before gradually expanding its academic scope over the decades. Today, it has grown into Minnesota’s second-largest university with more than 145,000 living alumni worldwide and a student population exceeding 15,000. The institution offers over 130 undergraduate programs along with more than 80 master’s, advanced certificate, and doctoral options across multiple colleges, including allied health and nursing, arts and humanities, business, education, social and behavioral sciences, and science, engineering, and technology. Known for combining academic rigor with practical learning opportunities, the university supports research centers such as the Minnesota River Basin Data Center and maintains specialized facilities like the Trafton Science Center and astronomical observatories. Campus life is highly active, featuring over 200 student organizations, intramural activities, and approximately 20 intercollegiate athletic teams, allowing students to participate in leadership, recreation, and community service while pursuing their studies. The Minnesota State Mavericks compete in numerous sports, mostly at the NCAA Division II level, reflecting the university’s strong athletic culture. Over time, the institution underwent several name changes to reflect its expanding mission and officially adopted the name Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1998, emphasizing its role in serving both the state and the broader nation. The main campus was relocated to a highland area overlooking the city by the late 1970s, providing a modern learning environment with scenic surroundings. In addition to on-campus education, the university offers online programs and extended learning opportunities, as well as satellite locations in Edina and Owatonna, expanding access for diverse learners. With a long tradition of educational excellence, strong alumni connections, and a commitment to career preparation, Minnesota State University, Mankato continues to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and real-world experience needed for professional success and meaningful community engagement.
