About
The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is a comprehensive public research university founded in 1910 and headquartered in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with a major additional campus in Long Beach and several teaching and research sites across the Mississippi Gulf Coast, along with online learning options that expand access for diverse students. It serves more than 13,000–14,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and over 70 countries, creating a globally connected academic environment focused on student success and workforce readiness. Classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity,” USM is recognized as one of a limited number of institutions nationwide with this distinction, highlighting its strong research infrastructure and innovation-driven culture. The university delivers transformative academic programs across disciplines and is known for pioneering work in polymer science, ocean science and engineering, safety and security studies, cybersecurity, hydrography, nutrition, and economic development, while also preparing graduates for emerging technology fields such as computer engineering and information technology. USM offers roughly 180 undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and doctoral programs, many of which are available through distance learning, and supports students with services such as academic counseling, career placement, study-abroad opportunities, and ROTC programs. The main Hattiesburg campus spans about one square mile and combines historic buildings with modern facilities including a business school, advanced nursing simulation labs, and a polymer science center, providing a balanced learning environment. Beyond academics, the university contributes more than $600 million annually to Mississippi’s economy and holds specialized accreditations in theatre, art and design, dance, and music—an achievement shared by only a small group of institutions nationwide. Student life is enriched by community engagement, research recognition, and competitive athletics, with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles participating in 17 NCAA Division I sports. With over a century of educational service, a diverse student population, and a strong commitment to innovation, research, and career preparation, the University of Southern Mississippi continues to play a major role in advancing higher education and regional development in the United States.
